9. See what type of damage is actually covered
Standard home insurance does cover plenty, but it surely doesn’t cover all the damage. Only ‘sudden and accidental’ damage can be covered by an insurance company, which means if you’ve had a leaky faucet for months, your damage won’t be covered due to bad maintenance of your home.
However, not all sudden disasters get covered – floods and earthquakes are usually not on the menu. If you want, you can add up an earthquake insurance, but for a flood you’ll have to buy a separate one.
