The last city in the list, Utrecht, doesn’t need to be introduced. This Dutch city is known all over the world as a host to Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands. Utrecht has a rich history and nowadays is known by its highly developed cultural life. And still, it starts to pay some citizens a ‘basic income’. Some residents of the city will be getting up to $1,000 per month.
The idea is to help claimants to avoid the ‘poverty trap’ — the situation then possible salary for unqualified workers is less then hardship allowance for unemployed. It looks like old social ideas are bringing into effect.
